Types of crops in Konso

In the Konso area, there are various kinds of edible cereals and crops that grow in different elevations.  Sorghum, Wheat (Kapa), Lablab (Okala), Maize, Finger millet, Teff (Kajjata), Pigeon Pea (Kurdetta), Chick pea (Shuumbura), Enset (Dubena), Casava (Mogo moka), Cow pea, Yam (Hindana), Taro (Kansata) are some of them.

Among these commonly used cereal is Sorghum, there are fourteen  sorghum varieties. The local names of  Sorghum are the following; Shuulayta, Raareta, Makaloota, Haddayta, Ojaara, Tishkaara, Pijjitta, Pijja, Xoyriyyaata, Gambeella, Koodano, Kulisshaya, Kenteera and Harkitteeta. Konso society has a traditional alcoholic drink that is made from sorghum called Chaka. The Most consumed plant in Konso is Moringa oleifera (Shelakda in konso), it can grow in the backyard and also as a semi wild plant.
